This past weekend I teamed up with some fellow Croton TU chapter members for their latest annual trip, a 3 night, 4 day outing to the Little Juniata river, way out (about 5 hours from White Plains) in PA. We stayed at the lovely Inn at Edgewater Acres in Alexandria. The setting was beautiful and quiet, with farmland all around us and quaint little towns scattered here and there. The accommodations were great, clean and comfortable, with a breakfast thrown in each morning. The bar was an added bonus, too, with great staff and good prices. Also, the Big J is located right in the Inn’s backyard, close to the junction with its little sister. The first night, I fished on my own, having some success with dry flies pretty close to the inn:
The next day, me and another member of the chapter (Mike), booked a guide, Leo Vensel (paflyguide.com) to take us around. Leo was fantastic. He took us to a really productive section of the Little J, which was actually pretty close to the Inn, where we hooked up with countless browns while nymphing. Leo provided lunch too, with cupcakes topped with chocolate covered coffee beans (drooling right now…). I don’t have any pictures of lunch, but here’s basically a 4-step guide to catching and releasing a nice J-brown:
Later on, in the evening, there was a fantastic sulphur hatch, where we were able to switch to dry flies. The fish were in a crazy feeding frenzy. I’ve never seen anything like that before. Fish were literally rising three or four feet away from us. Fun stuff (excuse my bug-eyes in this picture, I had a little issue with some sun block earlier which annoyed me all day):
The next day, Mike and I headed out by ourselves to the same spot. It was Saturday now, though, so we were not the only ones there anymore. Still, I was happy to catch this guy near the bank:
All in all, it was a great trip. I had a wonderful time, loved the folks from the Croton TU, discovered a great guide that I can use next time I’m in the area (thanks again, Leo!), and would definitely plan heading back there soon. I highly recommend it.
Have a great Memorial Day weekend!
