Fall Delaware Float

Yesterday I had another great float with Ken from the Baxter House. The weather was great and the fall foliage was spectacular. Unfortunately, the wind picked up here and there, but, overall, it didn’t really impact us. I had some success on nymphs and a caught the fish below on a dry (small BWO) later in the day. There were a lot of bugs, but not that much coming off the water. We saw caddis, light cahills, sulphers, BWOs and a ton of midges later in the day. Ken really got me working on my casting skills, too, as I seem to have gotten a little lax this past year and developed some bad habits. This was my first time floating the Delaware during this time of year and will definitely do it again.

TU Farmington Trip

On August 12, 2014, Croton Watershed TU coordinated a day for its members to meet up and fish the Farmington River in Northern Connecticut. About eight members, including two newer fly fisherman and several with more experience, met up at Upcountry Sportfishing in the early morning. There, we picked up some flies and got a quick tutorial on the ‘lay of the land’ from more experienced members. We then broke up into two groups to hit the river. The weather report called for scattered rain and thunderstorms throughout the day, but we were spared any bad weather until the early evening. The fishing was not that hot for all, but a few were caught in various sections of the river, mostly south of the Route 181 bridge. Midday, we grabbed a picnic table at Matthies Grove and dived into our packed lunches. Both groups soon met up after lunchtime and fished the Boneyard, which was large enough so that we could all spread out. When the rain started coming down in the early evening, we were conveniently near Chatterley’s, where we ended the day with some nice food and drinks.

Delaware Trip

On May 31st through June 1st, I joined some members of NYC TU for a trip to the Delaware. Our group of about 12 folks met on Saturday and fished a nice section of the Beaverkill with a lot of success. Thanks to a generous friend, we had the use of a cabin that night and barbecued a ton of food and got a nice campfire going. The following day we split up into groups and floated various parts of the Delaware. Thanks to John for the use of the cabin and Brent for the below pics.

Connecticut with my Nephew

I had the chance this year to take my nephew, Brandon, out fly fishing for the first time. We met up with Jeff Yates on two days (in early and late May) to fish the Mianus and the Norwalk. We didn’t have as much success on the Mianus as we did on the Norwalk, but Brandon learned a lot both days. I also learned a ton by watching Jeff teach Brandon how to fish the narrow and difficult Norwalk. As you can see, he had a great time and we both caught some fish!
